Are You Prepared for Tomorrow?Just listen to the Cosmos.
We are rapidly approaching the Winter Solstice on December 21, 2012. That date has been given mystical significance because of an ancient Maya “Long Cycle” Calendar that ends on that date, giving rise to speculation that the world is to end at that time. Maya elders heartily repudiate that idea. What is ending, they say, is the old World Age of materialism and denial. It is giving way to a new World Age of unity and higher consciousness.
How did the Maya come up with this information? What did they know?
They knew a lot, as can be seen in the ancient ruins at Chichen Itza in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. Chichen Itza was once one of the largest Maya cities. The rivers in this arid land run underground, and two large, natural sink holes (called cenotes), provided year-round water. To quote Lightning Warrior, the Wise Maya: “Our art, our wisdom, is present in each carved stone, in each temple and pyramid, in the sounds of Mother Earth and Father Water; in the fire of Humankind, in the song and the flight of the birds to wake up the day, in the mirrors of the cenotes and in the white of the spray in the sea.”
At Chichen Itza, the crown jewel is the Temple of Kukulkan—a feathered serpent deity similar to Quetzalcoatl of the Aztecs. This 79-foot stone pyramid is also known as El Castillo, Spanish for “the castle,” and it looks very much like the famous pyramids of Egypt. Like so many churches in Europe that were built atop pagan places of worship, El Castillo was built on top of much older temples, suggesting this area had long been considered sacred ground.
The Temple of Kukulkan was built with great understanding of astronomy and time. Each of the four steep stairways up the pyramid has 91 steps—the number of days in each of the four seasons of the year, with a final step at the top totaling 365, the number of days in a solar year. The pyramid is aligned with an important astrological axis: the western part faces the zenith passage sunset (the path that the sun takes twice a year in tropical latitudes from sunrise, through the zenith, to sunset). Using the patterns of shadow and light on El Castillo during the year, the Maya could track the seasons and mark the solstices and equinoxes for their rituals.
The Temple comes into its glory twice a year at the spring and fall equinoxes. As the sun sets, the play of light and shadow makes it looks like a diamond-backed snake’s tail (made up of seven interlocking triangles created by the edges of the stepped terraces on the pyramid) is undulating down the northern side of the pyramid, ending in the stone head of Kukulkan. So twice a year, the deity—the serpentine Kundalini and its seven chakras—is present among its people.
But the Maya also carefully watched the planet Venus in the skies. Another building at Chichen Itza is called El Caracol, “the observatory.” This one is aligned with the motions of Venus, which the Maya considered the sun’s twin. In June of 2012, as Venus passed directly between the Sun and Earth, a Maya shaman spoke about the return of Kukulkan and the start of a new age of spiritual enlightenment, “The cosmos is talking to us — we need to listen.”
So what exactly is this new age? First, it is a time when the Staff of Power is being transferred to the Spirit of the Feminine. The Maya prophecies talk about this reawakening of the Feminine. It is a time when materialism and ego consciousness are ending, and the world will be founded on values that honor all of life. This could certainly be taken to mean the “end of the world as we know it.” We can all feel the shift happening as we watch the old forms crumble. We live in a time of such rapid change, which may feel chaotic and frightening, but it has the potential of waking us up to what we must now do.
How can we best handle the changes that are imminently upon us? By expanding our consciousness and learning personal responsibility. By taking actions that increase the love and caring for all—for people, animals, plants, and the earth itself. And by learning our true soul purpose.
