Something’s Fishy

Something's Fishy Louise proudly displays a clean fishbone to her dinner companion.

Hello Dear Ones,

I love eating fish. Salmon. Halibut. Filet of Sole. Tuna Tartar. Red Snapper. Mahi Mahi. My favorite is Dover Sole. It’s very difficult to find here in California, but you can get it in New York and London. It’s super delicious. It’s mild and mellow and just lovely.

I eat fish for any meal, whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner. Yes, I do on occasion have fish first thing in the morning. Why not? Fish is a wonderful source of nutrition and energy and omega 3’s.

I think boning fish is an art. So if I am in a restaurant where they have whole fish, like Dover Sole, I always ask them to serve my fish whole so that I can bone it myself. People think I am a bit crazy, but so what. The waiters love it because it is one less fish they have to bone. I love eating one side of the fish, then turning it over and eating the second side and then having the whole bone left. Here is a picture of me showing off the bone.

So whenever I’m dining with friends, they always know when to get their cameras ready!

My love for eating (and deboning) fish is music to the ears of my dear friend—leading women’s health expert Christiane Northrup, M.D.  She believes that eating more fish and taking a good fish oil supplement are the best ways to enhance health in every cell of your body.

In her many books, Chris has included research and studies showing how eating fish can help sharpen your brain, reduce inflammation, ease hot flashes, enhance your immune system, improve your vision, and minimize the aging of your skin. It has even been reported that when it comes to heart health, fish oil can be more effective and protective than statin drugs—and without any side effects.

In honor of my affinity for eating and deboning fish, I’d like to leave you with the following trivia quiz about these amazing and delicious creatures. You’ll find the answers at the bottom of my post.

Fish on!

Louise

  1. Chum, sockeyes, and Chinook are all species of what well-loved fish?
  2. It’s called “mahi-mahi” in Hawaii, but what is another common name for this delicious sea fish?
  3. What seafood do people order most in restaurants?
  4. What is the tastiest part of the salmon?
  5. True or False: Sushi originally began as a method of preserving fish.

This week’s affirmationJunk food contributes to poor health. I am worth more, so I choose to eat healthy foods from now on.

Answers:

  1. Salmon. Salmon fishing is popular along the Pacific seaboard of North America, where these species are still very abundant.
  2. Dolphinfish (This is a fish not to be confused with the dolphin, a sea mammal.) Mahi-mahi is a traditional delicacy of Hawaii.
  3. According to a National Restaurant Association survey, shrimp is the top ordered seafood, followed by salmon and swordfish.
  4. Contrary to visual appeal, the thinner portion of the fillet contains more fat marbling, and is therefore more flavorful than the thicker portion.
  5. True. It actually began in China during the 7th Century. At the time, any fish caught had to be preserved.
