Self-healing is a phrase that refers to the body’s natural process of recovery. In the context of my new book, The Earth Diet, it means that the methods used to promote physical healing are tailored to the unique experience and requirements of the individual by the individual. Self-healing may be achieved through mechanisms such as eating organic foods, indulging in natural treatments and therapies (baths, massages, and acupuncture, for example), relaxation, meditation, prayer, self-love, self-empowerment, self-motivation, and positive thinking. We are very intelligent and wise beings by nature. You can use your intuition and trust your body to let you know which of these techniques is going to be most beneficial for you.

More people every day are realizing that there’s more to getting well than what pharmaceutical drugs alone can do for us. There is a growing body of research that shows how debilitating stress can be over time—and you should be aware that stress factors include forces both outside us, like pollution, and inside us, like our habitual thoughts. Our attitudes and emotions play a big role in healing. If you feel as if you have no control over your destiny and health, you may spiral downward emotionally and feel increased stress. If you take even a few positive actions on your own behalf, you’ll feel empowered and feel reduced stress. This can be an emotionally uplifting experience that raises the level of your wellness significantly. In one way or another, or better yet, in many ways, each of us can contribute something to the healing of our body.

My experience with self-healing is what led me to write The Earth Diet. At age 21, I learned that I had a precancerous tumor in my throat the size of a golf ball. On top of that, I had cellulite on my stomach and legs, mononucleosis (also known as Epstein-Barr virus, or in Australia, glandular fever), a digestive system that was not working (constipation), and the early stages of chronic fatigue syndrome. I was addicted to junk food and trapped in a vicious cycle of almost daily binge eating. Because I’d been eating genetically modified and processed foods, I was extremely bloated, stressed, depressed, disempowered, tired, and sore.

When I realized I’d hit rock bottom with my health, I decided I wouldn’t live another day like that and chose to make a change. Right away I committed to self-heal using the earth’s natural means. I began juicing every day and developed new recipes for a variety of raw and cooked dishes made from fresh, organic ingredients. I also adopted a positive mental outlook and consciously started thinking better thoughts. In addition, I did natural treatments and switched over all my skin care and household cleaners to natural, plant-based products. Once I made my decision to self-heal, within three months I was completely cured of all the adverse conditions I was experiencing. I’m pleased to report to you that to this day, seven years later, I’ve maintained my new lifestyle and I am extremely healthy.

16 Signs That Your Body Needs Healing Help

Your body is indicating that it needs healing if, among other things, you experience any of the following:
• You feel tired and weak.
• You have physical pain or inflammation.
• You get frequent colds or headaches.
• You are bloated.
• You have acid reflux or heartburn.
• You are constipated.
• You have cancer or another chronic disease.
• You have a virus or infection.
• You have a yeast overgrowth.
• You have acne, eczema, psoriasis, or dandruff.
• You have dark circles under your eyes.
• You are losing your hair.
• Your eyesight or hearing is weak.
• You are carrying excess weight.
• You feel bad (stuck, disempowered, or depressed) the majority of the time.
• You have a substance addiction or a process addiction.

It does not take an advanced degree to understand that whole, natural, organic foods are better for us than processed junk foods filled with synthetic chemicals, hormones, and genetic modifications. I believe everything you need to know to feel better, even if that means partial relief of your symptoms, is built into your body. The healing process is different for every person, and you know your body better than anyone else does or could. The more you can do to support your own innate healing mechanisms, the better. Good thoughts and good food are good medicine. Commit to feeling good. The body is more resilient when we are happy.
