6 Easy Ways To Practice Gratitude Daily

Gratitude arises when you acknowledge what you already have, as opposed to craving something you lack. When you take stock of every blessing you have earned or have been given, your present moment is filled with the energy of abundance.

You place your attention on the positive, which expands your heart and mind so you can soak up all that life offers. As you experience this enlivening energy of bountifulness, you’ll find that your attachment to material goods, jealousy, resentment, and anxiety diminishes.

When you operate in the Abundance Loop, you can maintain your equanimity. You don’t need to react impulsively when you have an inner knowing that you have enough and that you are enough. The calmness you feel helps you make the best decisions for you, without fear or anxiety. Let’s expand on this idea of returning to calmness and peace by learning some more practical ways to be grateful.

There are so many wonderful ways you can boost your gratitude, and they are easy to weave into your daily life. Here are just a few of my favorite techniques that work for my clients and me.

Give Thanks as Soon as You Wake Up. Simple thoughts about waking up in a warm bed or having running water will help you start your day in a positive frame of mind.

Give Thanks Before You Fall Asleep. Acknowledging the simple fact that you have a roof over your head and a safe place to sleep can put your mind at ease.

Sign Every E-mail “With Gratitude.” These two simple words not only inspire you to be grateful, but also let the recipients know how much you value them. This allows for a more positive rapport.

Tell People How Much You Appreciate Them. When you thank others, you’ve given them the opportunity to feel good about themselves. You are helping to increase both your self-worth (you received value from them) and theirs (they had value to share).

Quiet Your Mind, Meditate, and Pray. The techniques from the previous step are hugely powerful because you learn to place your attention on all that you have and all that you are. Imagine being connected to the abundant resources of the universe and give thanks for that connection.

Share with Others. Whether you’re offering food, money, time, or a simple act of kindness, share yourself and your abundance with others. Sharing what you have naturally proves that you had more than enough to begin with. Acts of generosity reinforce your Abundance Loop, while sowing seeds of gratitude so others can experience their own Abundance Loop.

Your Abundant Life

Let’s get more specific about what it is you have to be thankful for. Begin by finding a space to write or record your ideas. Take a few moments to relax, shake off any tension, and breathe deeply.

At the top of the page, write down today’s date and the title: “My Abundant Life.”

Start by going through your typical day, beginning with the moment you wake up in the morning. Below are some prompts to help you get going, but feel free to write about anything you feel blessed by, focusing on the positive things in your life. Include what you might think are small or simple things like your pillow or your warm pajamas, while also making note of the bigger things in your life like your home and your family.

For this exercise, only include things that you actually have right now. I know that there are always more and nicer things to acquire, but the point of this exercise is to focus on how much you have already. Also, try your best to focus on the positive and keep the “buts” out. For instance, you can say, “I have a car,” and stop before you say, “but I wish it was nicer.”

If you get stuck, try starting off your sentences with “I am thankful that . . .” Take your time. There’s no need to rush through this. Ready? Set? Go.

• For dinner, I eat_ _________________________________.
• In my community, I have__________________________.

• At the end of the day, I____________________________.
• I am _______________________________and abundant!

 Congratulations for documenting your abundant life! Simply by recording it, you are acknowledging how much you have right now. Well done! Now that you’ve taken inventory of all the things you are thankful for, how do you feel? Do you notice a difference in your mental state by having gone through this exercise? What shifted for you? How can you channel this newfound energy into your life?
