If you’re driving down the street and realize you’re going the wrong way, you can change course and choose a new route that will take you where you want to go. The same holds true for your consciousness, too. If you’re proceeding in a negative direction, you don’t have to keep going down that same counterproductive path. You just have to realize that your life is heading down a dead-end road. Remind yourself of your options, and then let them redirect you—just like a map to a new destination.

Changing Directions in Life

When I’m in need of a consciousness shift, I try to consider My Adjacent Possibilities, a MAP of options that I can choose in order to move to a different direction—either in focus or emotion, or both. If I find myself worried or stressed about something, I investigate my adjacent possibilities and know that it’s safe for me to trust. In fact, in the whole of consciousness, trusting is the peaceful and preferable choice I want to make, and this alternative exists within my grasp. It’s not foreign or foolish; it’s my right and my responsibility to embrace.

Step Into A Cloud of Possibilities

Sometimes I visualize the adjacent possibility—whether it’s trust or some other conscious choice—floating like a cloud beside me, and I actually take a step into that intended energy! It helps make the shift more real. If I’m feeling self-doubt, I know that right next to that conclusion is the adjacent possibility of self-encouragement—and I also know that it’s the only choice that will move me in the direction I desire.

Close your eyes and envision yourself stepping into a sparkling, beautiful cloud. Every dewy molecule that alights on your face and arms is a joyous adjacent possibility . . . and the options stretch out for miles. Spin around and feel the refreshing touch of another and another. How exciting it is to always be surrounded by possibilities!
