Creative Awakening: 3 Steps to Discover and Share Your Unique GiftsJulia McCutchen shows how conscious creativity leads to freedom and fulfilment
Creativity lies at the core of who we truly are. It’s been part of our culture for 40,000 years, since the earliest forms of expression adorned the walls of caves around the world.
However, priorities have shifted in more recent years and creativity has been consigned to the domain of the chosen few or a pastime we reserve for hobbies and weekends.
But if we’re to survive the global challenges we currently face, we need to reclaim creativity as our natural state of being.
A bold statement perhaps?
Yet adopting a conscious approach to creativity as a way of being, instead of something a minority of us do, has the potential for deep and positive transformation – for ourselves and our world.
Self-Discovery and Self-Expression
Creative awakening is a process of self-discovery that naturally occurs when we embrace the full range of possibilities creativity presents us with.
When we engage with creative self-expression of any kind, we enter a heightened state of awareness, which we can learn to cultivate at will.
This opens the way for us to reach a deep level of inner truth where we access our true self and the source of our richest and most original ideas. It also leads us to discover our unique gifts and the most authentic ways to share them in the world.
As a result, we enjoy an expanded sense of individual freedom and fulfilment, and take awakened actions to create what we’re here to create and make the contribution that only we can make.
Step 1: Connect With Your True Self
Our unique gifts arise from our true self, the eternal part of us that lies beyond the fears and anxieties of our everyday, conditioned self. So our first step is to connect with our true self.
Creative awakening teaches seven core principles which support us to access this inner truth:
Balance, for example, reminds us of the importance of opposites like focus and flow in the dance of creation, yet simultaneously directs our awareness to the whole from which the opposites pour forth.
- Dive In: Open your heart and mind to connect with the whole through the balance of opposites within you as a way in to your true self, the individual spark within the creative flame of life. The inner space this creates allows clarity about your unique gifts to arise.
Step 2: Nurture Your Creative Soul
The next step is to adopt a playful approach to developing our ideas around whatever we feel most drawn towards for additional clues about our natural talents and how best to share them.
Drawing on the above example, we need to remember the importance of balancing the amount of energy we put out to the world by replenishing our inner creative.
- Dive In: Make a list of everything you feel inspired by, such as reading, spending time in nature and with like-minded friends. Then schedule time in your diary to enjoy at least one of these activities every single day.
Step 3: Share Your Gifts Consciously and Creatively
When it comes to sharing our gifts through creative self-expression, creative awakening reminds us that there are a multitude of forms to choose from.
These include the arts such as writing and music as well as the way we earn our living, choose our clothes and cook our food.
Having taken the first two steps, we’re now ready to take action awakened according to our highest personal priorities.
- Dive In: Clarify the purpose you feel most inspired to serve through stream of consciousness writing in your journal and allow that to guide each and every step you take.
Enjoy the journey!
