Did You Exist Before You Were Born?
Life may not be as random as you think. Is your life mapped out? What do you think?
I believe that each of us exists before we are born on earth. As an ex-pharmaceutical scientist, that might be a bit much for my former colleagues to take, but I absolutely mean it.
Each of us is pure consciousness, currently focused in a physical dimension. Science would typically say that life is random, ultimately stemming from the random birth of subatomic particles, but I don’t quite agree with that.
Mainstream science says that consciousness must be a side-effect of brain chemistry. But I believe that the brain merely affects consciousness, much in the same way that the quality of wiring in a TV affects the signal processing and thus the quality of picture you get. The TV does not create the program, and nor does the brain create consciousness.
Consciousness is something fundamental to nature - it is stitched into the very fabric of reality. The brain receives and processes consciousness. Who you are, is something much grander that what you see when you look in the mirror.
Consciousness transcends time and space. Funnily enough, science is arriving at the same conclusion when examining the subatomic world.
Recent experiments in quantum physics show us that the universe is interconnected. The technical term is entanglement. The basic idea is that if two particles have been connected then they remain connected no matter how far apart they might be. With a certain class of particles, known as fermions, no two can be in the same state in the entire universe.
Here’s something that will blow your mind: when you think a thought you affect the fermions in your brain. In some weird way the entire universe has to agree with you, in that every fermion (and there’s about 1080 in the universe) has to take the state of the ones in your brain into account. Everything is connected!
Yes, the universe hears you!! It hears your wishes, your desires, your hopes and your dreams, and even your thoughts about yourself. That is a fact!!
But it gets weirder because very recent experiments in quantum physics have now extended the idea of entanglement in space to entanglement in time, in that the past, present, and future are connected and that the present moment is somehow affecting the past.
Particles that exist in the present are also smeared into the past and the future. This leads us to the obvious conclusion that time as we know it as humans is only part of the story. It is more accurate to say that all time is connected, or that all time is simultaneous.
The point of power is definitely in the present, and the present also exists everywhere and everywhen.
I believe that entanglement is a shadow of the basic reality of consciousness – that everything is connected in consciousness so we see the same phenomenon at the subatomic level, like reality is a cinematic projection of consciousness.
So if you start with the assumption that you exist as pure consciousness, then you must have existed before you were born. Really, you are everywhere and everywhen!
And given that we don’t do things randomly in our own lives, it’s highly unlikely that your birth was an accident.
Might you have had reasons for being born at a particular time, given the entire span of human history (and future), and in a particular country, into a particular set of social and economic conditions?
We choose the landscape of the lives we are born into, its environment, its conditions, and we even agree and connect with other consciousnesses who will populate it. Our choices throughout our lives help us to navigate this landscape. And many of us share some of the same landscapes so there’s a very high likelihood that we will walk in the same place at the same time, so to speak, and thus people come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.
We are also born with natural skills and tendencies. Of course, these are also genetic, so we must be choosing a genetic family line that will give us the genetic tendencies that we require for our particular life.
So does this all mean that your life is mapped out for you?
Not quite!
Yes, we are born into a landscape but our choices govern much of our journey through it. Within your landscape, your intentions take you to where you want to go. They attract what you focus on. Your emotions amplify your intentions. Positive emotion speeds you the manifestation of your desires. Negative emotion slows it down. Your beliefs about yourself, others, the world, and your current reality also affect your journey.
And there are also forces that affect us along the way. First there’s momentum. It’s the force of the journey so far. Making a change in your life doesn’t always change your reality in an instant. Momentum means that some things cling on as others change, just like turning a ship takes it along an arc instead of it making an immediate 90-degree turn.
And there are external forces that act upon us too. The cyclic patterns of the cosmos impact some of our biological processes. Production of the hormone melatonin (which regulates sleep), for instance, is driven by the cyclic rotation of the earth and the movement of the sun across the sky.
And we have internal forces, from our own genetics, to the spiritual memory of the purpose and meaning of our lives and the landscape we were born into.
And other people affect us. Emotions are contagious. We spread ours and catch emotions from other people, just like we give and receive the cold. It’s why you feel happy around happy people and sad around those who are depressed. It is part-facilitated through an interconnected network of cells in the brain called the ‘Mirror Neuron System’ (MNS). Harvard researchers found that an average of 25% of the average person’s happiness at any given time is a consequence of the emotional state of their friends.
So clearly there is some form of destiny and there is also free will, and there are forces that influence us. Many people have wondered whether life is governed by destiny or free will so I decided to have a go at solving the seeming confusion with a simple formula that basically says that it’s neither. In fact it’s both!
I have always had an interest in math, so here’s my little formula to describe the reality that each of us experiences. Math? I hear you shriek! :-)
Don’t worry, you don’t need to know anything about math to understand it. It really just condenses all of this article so far into a single line.
In words, it basically says that the reality you experience (R), is a consequence of: your intentions (I), your emotions (E), your beliefs (B), the momentum of your life up until now (p), external forces that act upon you, like your environment (Fe), internal forces, like genetics and your spiritual self (Fi), and the effect of other people (O).

You’ll notice that I also added an X at the end. This is because I don’t believe that I have all the answers so you may find that there is another force too. Please get in touch if you do! You can post on my Facebook page.
Well, I bet you never thought you’d read a math formula in an article on HealYourLife! I just couldn’t resist it. :-) Blending science and spirituality, and explaining it in ordinary language is my thing. It is one of the skills I chose to be born with.
So some of life is mapped out and the rest is for you to do as you please. Given this, I’d like to share one of my guiding principles in life with you:
Whatever you do, do it with kindness!!!
