Hair to the Rescue
Down in the dumps with the Oil Slick Blues? Feeling helpless? Despondent because you think you can’t make a difference? Drop those blues!
If you've got hair (or a hairy critter), your excess mane is badly needed!
It seems human (and animal) hair is THE most efficient material for absorbing oil. (That's why we have to shampoo so often.)
More than 400,000 pounds of hair are on the way to help soak up black goo along the Gulf Coast. Old nylon pantyhose are stuffed like sausages to make Hair Booms, which volunteers use to clean beaches, birds, and marine mammals. Boom-making parties are being organized in nearly every hood along the Gulf. Pet groomers, salons, barbers, and even the military are also sending their clippings off to help contribute to the effort.
Hair is renewable, safe and plentiful. China has been recycling hair into fiber for over 3,000 years!
Since I've been blessed with a perfect head (you know there's only so many of those— and God put hair on all the rest), I have nothing to give to the cause. So, I'm doing my part by telling you all. ;)
Spread the word to your barber or stylist—or grab some scissors and take matters into your own hands.
Matter of Trust.org is collaborating with thousands of salons across the planet to mobilize our coifs into soakers for the spill. Individuals can donate their tresses, too. :)
See….there IS something each of us can do.
