Never Miss a Huggable Moment

Expressing love with a hug will soothe and heal.

One of the greatest feelings in life is when those you love wrap their arms around you. Wow—don’t hugs feel fabulous? Of course, you don’t have to limit them to family members or to those who are dear to you.

We can hug our co-workers, friends, teammates, and many others we encounter every day. In fact, most of us give and receive too few hugs and could benefit from giving and receiving more!

Now I’m not recommending that you just walk up to somebody indiscriminately and hug him or her (although in special cases, this may work out nicely)—that would be an unwise use of hugs. But I do suggest that you take the time to hug daily. However, this can require careful attention because some of us aren’t as adept at closeness as others.

There can be valuable reasons for keeping some people at arm’s length, but many of us have taken this too far. Frequently, we put up unnecessary barriers to those we could easily hug, such as our parents, siblings, close friends, relatives, and co-workers.

So, when opportunities arise to express love and gratitude, take advantage of them and don’t let these moments slip by. There are times throughout any day when a hug can say more than a thousand words. When this occurs, shine your light (in the form of a hug) on this situation!

A hug is a heart-to-heart expression. If you can’t find a person to embrace, hugging a pet, tree, or just about anything else (even a pillow) can be a move in this wise direction. The value of a hug is enormous. It reduces stress and provides you with an inner calmness that leads to success.

The secret to remember is that sincere and appropriate hugs help transform stress into success. Here are some action steps you can take:

  • Keep your eyes open for “hug opportunities” throughout the day and night.
  • When an appropriate time arises, put your arms out and seize the moment with a giant hug.
  • See how many hugs you can give or receive in one day. The rewards will show for themselves!
