What Is Nutrition?

 

Nutrition is defined by Merriam-Webster as the act or process of nourishing or being nourished.   To be nourished means to feed our bodies foods that aid in growth, function and well-being.  When we choose foods that nourish our bodies, we feel more vigor and vibrancy in all areas of our lives.

 

What Are The Benefits Of Supporting Your Body With Good Nutrition? 

 

The benefits of eating healthy, organic and whole foods are endless!  Just for starters, you can reduce your risk of heart disease.  Nutritious foods also support optimal brain functioning, including lowering or preventing risk of Alzheimer’s, not to mention keeping your mood in balance.  You’ll also experience a bump in energy levels allowing you to do more of what you love.  Basically, every system in your body functions better when you eat healthy, nutritious foods. 

 

But There’s So Many Different Plans And Advice About What To Eat – Which Should I Choose?

 

The myriad of health and nutrition trends is as vast as the deep blue sea these days.  It can be difficult to know which advice to follow and who to trust.  But there are some basic truths to good nutrition that are consistent in all of the health and nutrition books on the market today. 

 

These basics are a great way to start nourishing your body:

 

     •  Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day (and add a squeeze or two of lemon)
     •  Eat 5-7 servings of organic vegetables and fruits
     •  Choose lean, organic meats
     •  Add power greens like kale and spinach to salads
     •  Add legumes like black beans, lentils and black-eyed peas

 

If you can pick one thing to avoid more often than any other food item, it would be sugar.  Refined sugar prematurely ages the body (and wrinkles faces), adds unnecessary stress on the body, affects our ability to focus, and offers no nutritional value.  When it comes to eating nutritionally, the bottom line is this:

 

Whole, organic raw foods are the absolute best for you when it comes to nutrition.  Adding just 2 to 3 servings of raw colorful vegetables to your daily diet can greatly improve how you look and feel and support optimal functioning of your body, mind and spirit. 

 

Remember, you should always follow your own inner guidance system and consult your physician before changing or starting a new diet.   

 

What Can You Do Today To Nourish Your Body?

 

You don’t have to convert to veganism or ban all desserts from your diet.  Sometimes, we get stuck in not making any changes because we feel it’s all or nothing.  If you can simply choose to focus on eating one healthy meal per day, that is a great start and will trickle into more healthy choices over time.  It’s also important that you savor and enjoy your snacks and meals, including the occasional dessert.  But there’s more to health and nutrition than food alone.  Being healthy and nourishing our bodies is also about how we think about ourselves, how we use our bodies and how we tap into our spiritual source. 

 

Healthy Foods, Healthy Thoughts And Daily Exercise – A Combination That Trumps All Diets!

 

Truly nurturing ourselves goes way beyond nutrition.  Nutrition is about feeding our bodies nourishing foods that support all systems.  We also have to feed our minds with nurturing thoughts, feed our hearts with loving thoughts and feed our spirits by connecting to our deeper selves.

Pay attention to your thoughts about your body and your health.  If you notice several negative thoughts, try Louise Hay’s affirmation below. Say this affirmation every day in front of a mirror and connect the words with your emotions.

I have a happy, slender body.
It is my joy to love you to perfect health.
I love my beautiful shape.
The more I love my body, the healthier I feel.
My body is such a good friend; we have a great life together.
I love and appreciate my beautiful body just the way it is.
I rejoice that I have chosen this particular body because it is perfect for me.
I create my own security. I love and approve of myself.
It is safe to be me. I am wonderful just as I am. I choose joy and self-acceptance.

 

Nourish your body, nourish your mind and nourish your heart to feel vibrantly healthy from the inside out!

 

Get Moving To Nourish Your Body, Mind And Spirit

 

It’s imperative to use those muscles you’ve been given, but you don’t have to sign up for a marathon or work out at the gym for an hour a day.  In fact, if you can commit to a 20-minute brisk walk or 15-minute yoga stretch, over a short period of time, you’ll begin to feel a surge of energy that is equivalent to an hour work-out.  Choose something you enjoy doing already, like hiking or riding a bike.  Remember, it’s about moving and getting fresh air – it’s about feeling good.

 

Exercising your body is important, but equally important in nourishing yourself is exercising your mind.  We know you’ve heard it before, but meditation is the key to getting in tune with your higher self.  Spending only 5 minutes sitting quietly can have enormous positive effects on the body, mind and spirit.  So sit down, breathe deeply and relax for 5 minutes a day – this one practice will help you feel better and feeling better leads to taking better care of yourself.
