“Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.”

— Mason Cooley

There used to be a cozy little bookstore just a few miles from the office called Esmerelda’s. I loved that place. There wasn’t much room to walk around, but it didn’t matter. There was always a new treasure to discover. It was there that I’d sit in one of their oversized wooden patio chairs and devour a Fannie Flagg novel over a cappuccino. It was there that I’d get together with friends to discuss plotlines and intriguing characters before book clubs became the fashion. It was there that I could travel to faraway lands of the past and new cities in the future and never leave my seat. It was there that I met authors in person whom I’ve always adored—Anne Rice, Isabelle Allende, and Jennifer Louden. And it was there that I bought my first copy of Louise Hay’s You Can Heal Your Life.

I know it’s so much more convenient to jump online and order the latest new book. I’m an Amazon junkie myself. But every now and then, it feels so good to step off the treadmill, shut down the computer, call up a friend I haven’t talked to in a while, and visit one of my neighborhood independent bookstores. This month, I invite you to do the same.

These magnificent places could use your business right now and I’d be willing to bet that they’re already warming up a delicious coffee drink and have a recommendation for you that can change your life.

I’d like to send a warm hug of appreciation to all of the gift shops, specialty boutiques, and bookstores—large and small, online and off—that introduce us to the world of possibilities and help shape our lives. And thanks to the wonderful people at each one who share our enthusiasm for our books and products and who create some of the most beautiful and eye-catching displays for Louise and all of our authors. Thank you for all you do!
